Ingredients

  • Shortcrust pastry sheets (1lb)
  • 8oz cheddar cheese
  • 1 Tbsp. parsley (chopped)
  • 1.7 ounce butter
  • An Egg
  • 2 onions (finely sliced)
  • 1 Tbsp. mustard seeds
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Frying pan
  • Pastry cutters
  • Baking sheet
  • Pastry brush
  • Baking paper

Method

Take a frying pan and melt the butter in it. Add onions and sauté them until golden brown. Set aside. Now preheat the oven to 180ºC if it’s a fat-assisted oven; otherwise, keep the temperature to200ºC. Next, combine the onions with parsley, mustard seeds, salt, pepper, and cheddar cheese. You can also use flavored cheese of your choice. Now take the pastry sheets, unroll them, and cut each sheet into four equal squares or rectangles. Divide the onion cheese filling into four parts and place each part at the center of every pasty. Brush up the border of each onion-cheese pasty with egg wash. You can also use water instead of egg wash. Now fold the pasties and seal the edges. Make a few steam holes at the top of these pasties. Next, apply egg wash on the outside of every cheese and onion pasty before putting them in the oven for 15-20 minutes. At the end of 15 minutes, take the pasties out and garnish with more cheese.

Cheese And Onion Pasty With Potatoes

This is another version of cheese and onion pasty for those who love potatoes. Well, you don’t have to put extra effort into this recipe as it is simple just like the original one.

Ingredients

  • A packet of pastry sheets (1lb)
  • 2 onions (finely sliced)
  • 8-9oz cheddar cheese
  • 2 small, diced potatoes
  • An egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil/butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped parsley

Take a frying pan and add some olive oil or butter. Add the peeled and chopped potatoes and onions and sauté until golden brown. Turn off the gas and allow this potato-onion mixture to cool. Once it is has been cooled down enough, add cheese, parsley, salt, and pepper. You can also add mustard seeds and other herbs of your choice. Mix these ingredients well. Now use the same procedure for cutting and filling up the pasty. Divide the sheets into 4 parts, fill them up with the mixture, apply egg wash, and roll them. Seal the edges of the pasties and apply egg wash over them. Place these pasties on the baking sheet (sprinkle some flour) and bake until cooked.  

Useful Information: 

You need to fry the potatoes if you want that crisp crunch and nice flavor. Don’t skip frying the onions as well.
